In those organisms producing N-formylmethionyl-tRNAfMet for translation initiation, this enzyme also recognizes the initiator tRNAfMet and catalyses the formation of L-methionyl-tRNAfMet, the substrate for EC 188.8.131.52, methionyl-tRNA formyltransferase.
