The plant enzyme also catalyses the reactions of EC 126.96.36.199 ornithine carbamoyltransferase, EC 188.8.131.52 carbamate kinase and EC 184.108.40.206 agmatine deiminase, thus acting as putrescine synthase, converting agmatine [(4-aminobutyl)guanidine] and ornithine into putrescine and citrulline, respectively.
