Agarose

Class: Polysaccharide

Systematic name: (1→4)-3,6-anhydro-α-L-galactopyranosyl-(13)-β-D-galactopyranan

Abbreviated name: [4)-3,6-An-α-L-Galp-(1→3)-β-D-Galp-(1]n

Note: An is the abbreviaton for anhydro.

Porphyran

Structure: A polysaccharide from the red alga Porphyra umbilicalis. Some of the residues are as above, but some are:

4-linked 6-O-sulfo-α-L-galactopyranose residue
(the biological precursor of the 3,6-anhydro residue above)
3-linked 6-O-methyl-β-D-galactopyranose residue
